Suisun City Secures $685,000 Grant for Senior Center Improvements
SUISUN CITY – The Suisun City Senior Center will get a new roof, kitchen, site improvements and pedestrian safety measures thanks to a $685,000 federal grant.Suisun City Public Works officials received written confirmation of the grant award this week from the state Department of Housing and Community Development, which administers the program. The City applied for the grant for the second time this June through the Community Development Block Grant program.
The block grants, designed to benefit low- and moderate-income people, are highly competitive. This is the first rehabilitation grant Suisun City has received through this program.
“The money is sorely needed to upgrade this vital facility that serves so many Suisun City seniors,” said City Manager Suzanne Bragdon. “We are delighted the State recognized this need in our community, and appreciate the outstanding grant-writing by Public Works Management Analyst Alysa Majer.”
By early 2011, Public Works staff expects to issue bidding documents to start the process of designing and building the Senior Center improvements.
The Senior Center, located at 318 Merganser Drive, was built in 1987 to provide recreation and social activities for local seniors, and access to a variety of resources. But since the Center was constructed, Suisun City has seen its population of seniors increase more than 150 percent.
The block grant will
- Renovate the kitchen, including new energy efficient appliances and safety devices
- Replace the roof, which regularly leaks during storms
- Upgrade landscaping, parking, trash enclosures, fencing and other exterior features.
Snow Coming to Suisun City!
As part of the opening day of the Old World Christmas Market on Thanksgiving weekend, the Suisun City Historic Waterfront B.I.D. has partnered with the Matt Garcia Foundation to present Snow Day on the Waterfront free for children 12 and under.
Weather permitting, the snow will be available on the east end of Solano Street between Air, Land and Sea Travel and the Athenian Grill on Saturday, November 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“To have children play in the snow who may not otherwise have ever seen snow is an wonderful idea,” says Vince Guisande, foundation board member and B.I.D. member. “To the best of our knowledge, there has not been a snow event in the Fairfield-Suisun area.”
The 1,000 square foot snow park will be covered with about a foot of blown snow created using 20 tons of ice chopped on site by Glacier Ice of Fremont. The area will be fenced for safety reasons, and hay bales will be placed around the perimeter of the snow to provide seating for parents.
Depending on the outside temperature, the blown snow is expected to last three to five hours. As snow events do not work well in the rain, the event will be cancelled if there be rain in the forecast the day before the event.
The Matt Garcia Foundation is dedicated to supporting youth and helping to stop crime in order to build a stronger community in Solano County.

Salvation Army to Reveal New Vision for Suisun City Center
SUISUN CITY, California - The Salvation Army and Suisun City Council invites the entire community to attend a very special unveiling on Tuesday night of all new plans for the Salvation Army Corps Community Center.
"The old is being wiped away with an expanded and improved plan that is virtually incomprehensible," City Manager Suzanne Bragdon said. "We still have to pinch ourselves to be sure we're not dreaming!"
The Salvation Army will present its plans to the City Council at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 19) at the start of the regular City Council meeting in City Hall, 701 Civic Center Blvd, Suisun City
A brief reception will follow during which residents can meet Capt. Jonathan Harvey, his wife Vicky and other members of The Salvation Army team, and see the new renderings up close.
It's been just about a year since the Suisun City Council sold the shuttered community center on East Wigeon Way to The Salvation Army. Initial demolition and remodeling work was put on hold when a new source of funding became available that nearly doubled the budget for the Suisun City center.
From the start, Suisun City leaders and The Salvation Army shared a commitment to provide the community with the very best center and do it right. The new plans are the next step in that process.

Speed Radar Signs to be Installed in Suisun City
SUISUN CITY, Calif. - New solar-powered speed radar signs will be installed on Pintail Drive this fall near two local elementary schools.
The signs are designed to remind motorists of the speed limit on the street and encourage them to comply. The new signs will create a safer environment for students walking or riding their bikes to and from the schools.
The Suisun City Public Works Department is seeking quotes from qualified contractors to install the new signs.
Contractors interested in providing quotes for this work are encouraged to submit a formal bid to the Public Works Department. All bids are due by 2 p.m. Wednesday October 27, 2010. >> Read more >>

Suisun City to Upgrade Highway 12 Signage
SUISUN CITY, Calif. - The Suisun City Public Works Department is seeking quotes from qualified contractors to upgrade the signage along Highway 12 through the city.To enhance the highway driving experience and support the City's economy, various signs along Highway 12 will be relocated and some additional signage will be installed. The work is expected to take place in late 2010 or early 2011.

Fuel Cleanup Work Continues
SUISUN CITY, Calif. - A contractor working for Travis Air Force Base has begun excavating soil near the site of a fuel pipeline leak that occurred nearly two years ago.
Working for the Air Force under guidance from Solano County, the contractor will excavate a trench approximately 10 feet wide by 60 feet long to a depth of 12 feet on the shoulder of Highway 12 near Lawler Ranch Parkway.
The soil is being hauled to a certified hazardous waste facility out of the area.
The work is expected to continue through October 26.
No traffic disruptions or public safety hazards are expected related to the current work.
